The angels brought the Good News that God’s son had been born. Jesus teaches us that we should value and love one another. By our example, our children are nurtured and encouraged to be kind and compassionate, showing God’s love to those around them and enabling everyone to flourish.

Everyone is included in the St Edburg’s family, inspired to make a positive change and encouraged to interact with the community around us.

Pedagogy

We do this through an ambitious English curriculum with texts as the beating heart of a lesson. The main driver of our English curriculum is high quality texts which foster a love of reading in our children and inspire them to write.

During their time at our school, our children will experience a wide range of carefully chosen, high quality, culturally diverse picture books and novels which help develop ambitious vocabulary and enable them to interact with the global community around them.

We believe that teaching and learning cannot be a ‘one size fits all’ approach and so our text led English Curriculum has been shaped by our vision to enable all children, regardless of background ability or additional needs to flourish and become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be.

We teach the National Curriculum supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. Careful links are made across the curriculum to ensure that children’s English learning is relevant and, wherever possible, link our reading, writing and the topic that we are covering in History and Geography.

At St Edburg’s, children will be exposed to a bespoke, language rich, creative and progressive English curriculum which will not only enable them to become primary literate, but will also develop a love of reading, a deeper understanding and appreciation of the world around them and the ability to question others and develop their own informed points of view.

Performance Poetry Week and World Book Day March 2023

The whole school enjoyed taking part in a performance poetry themed fortnight, ending in St Edburg's Poetry Slam. This year our theme was nursery rhymes but we 'Flipped the Narrative'  and wrote our own alternative versions.

 

We had a nursery rhyme 'mash up' from Year 1, a very resourceful 'Jack and Jill' and Incy Wincy Spider who went beyond the water spout to explore the world...

 

The finalists from our own poetry slam went onto compete with four other local schools in front of a huge audience and... reception and Year 1 WON their heats! We were so proud - we loved performing!
