Our Inclusive Approach

Sign of the Week

St Edburg's would like to introduce, 'Makaton Sign of the Week'.

Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression.

This has been running in Picasso class for the past year and has been hugely successful. Giving children the opportunity to communicate in different ways is so beneficial.

At St Edburg's all children are valued, no matter their form of communication. Each week a new Makaton sign will be posted on the school website. This video will also be shared within school, so you can practice with your child at home.

You can find out more about Makaton by visiting the Makaton website or asking our inclusion team specialists

Supporting Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)

At St Edburg’s we use the Speech and Language Link framework. The Language Link assessment is carried out with all Reception aged children. There is also an assessment programme available for children in Key Stage 1. The framework offers a comprehensive selection of intervention programmes, which can be used to deliver Targeted Provision supporting different aspects of SLCN. You will be contacted if your child has been identified as benefiting from additional support. Information and resources are available to support children at home, as well as access to a parent portal offering additional information. If a child has also been identified as having a particular speech difficulty a further assessment can be carried out using the Speech Link assessment programme and additional support may be sought by completing a Speech and Language referral.
