Modern Foreign Languages
“Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things” Flora Lewis
At St Edburg’s School, pupils in Key Stage 2 benefit from the opportunity of learning Spanish.
There are many personal, social, cultural and career benefits to being able to communicate confidently in another language. In our school, every child in Key Stage 2 should have the chance to develop their own modern foreign language skills.
We want our children to be enthusiastic, engaged and challenged to develop their ability to use and understand another language. Our pupils will gain knowledge of key vocabulary, grammar and the phonics of Spanish. We will also encourage our pupil’s awareness of what lies behind a different language, enhancing the richness and diversity of different cultures. In our school we have children from diverse and different cultural backgrounds - in studying a new language, we aim to give children the opportunity to celebrate their own languages, backgrounds and heritage.
We want to develop confident and independent pupils who are not afraid to communicate in a different language. We want our children to experience the joy of learning a new language, to flourish and to believe in themselves. We aim to set them on the path to being life-long language enthusiasts.
“… and the decision to teach a foreign language is an act of commitment, generosity and mediation. It’s a promise to educate – yes – and to equip. But also to awaken; to kindle a flame that you hope will never go out…” John Le Carré
